Term 2 is traditionally an exciting time for students and this includes all the different facets that occur within our writing program. This term we are continuing to focus on ‘organisation’ and structure, as well as different genres in workshop time and idea generation and planning in ‘writer’s notebook’ sessions. Students have been working on their narratives, and will also focus on persuasive writing as well as informative texts this term.
We started this term by revisiting the students’ manuscripts from our recent publishing day. Students edited their writing and received feedback from their peers. Once checked with a final conference by the teaching team, these short stories will become one of five short story volumes that we will publish and share with an official launch – more on this shortly!
We also introduce our debating program in term two. These workshops offer students the opportunity to build upon their skills in a safe, friendly, fun and challenging manner. In a session today, we brainstormed the benefits of debating and the students came up with the following list: reading, speaking and listening, philosophy, writing speeches for homework, organisation, meeting deadlines, public speaking – and of course, writing! This term we are also beginning spelling ‘toolboxes’, where students will be working on spelling skills and strategies in weekly sessions.
